Of
all of the documents in this dossier, I believe that this recording
is one of the most important ones. In talking about Harpo and analyzing
his life, many people miss an important aspect: Harpo’s voice.
Just because he never spoke onstage doesn’t mean that Harpo
never spoke at all. The people who loved him most heard him speak
on a daily basis. In fact, it was their fantastic conversations
with Harpo that kept them wanting more of him. This little snippet
of audio gives us a great idea of what it was like to talk to Harpo.
He was somebody who could always make you smile.
Though
the story he tells is filled with sadness and hardship, he still
tells it as if he was telling a joke. Yes, Harpo had an extremely
difficult childhood, filled with poverty and anti-Semitism, but
he was never angry or bitter about it. He stayed quiet and compassionate
through it all, keeping his light attitude with him through all
of his struggles. Harpo was a strong-willed man, who never wanted
to give up at the site of an obstacle. He kept on fighting, always
with a smile.
