and just plays it with all his heart. What he creates is a moment of pure beauty. In watching the scene, it is easy to see that this is Harpo’s true passion. Though he loses his smile, we can feel how happy he is. Harpo loved being himself, and this was as close as he could get to that.       In watching him play the harp, the first thing you notice is his style of playing. Harpo is not playing it “properly,” for he never had proper lessons. Harpo never learned how to read music; everything he played he did by ear. Furthermore, unlike his brother Chico who had piano lessons, Harpo taught himself how to play the harp. Even before he knew what the harp sounded like, Harpo had a strange connection to it. He wanted to play it more than anything. Nevertheless, Harpo was able to create beautiful music despite all of these shortcomings. Once he started playing, it was like an addiction; he had to feed his need to play. When he did play, he was more himself than at any other time in his life. Audiences could pick up on this extremely easily, and it was because they could feel his passion for the harp that they loved watching him play it.
The second video clip shows the same scene a little later. After playing his harp, and getting his emotional rush, Harpo is able to switch back into funny-man. It is a huge contrast, but somehow, it is believable. I think the reason is that even when he is being his crazy self, we still see that special spark inside him; the spark that only fully comes out when he plays the harp.
